How to Properly Cuddle Your Cat

Do you have a cuddly cat? If so, you’ll want to mark your calendars for March 23rd. It’s Cuddy Kitten Day. While every day is cuddly kitten day for some, Fluffy will definitely enjoy some extra attention. Cuddling your feline friend isn’t exactly rocket science, but there are a few things to keep in mind. A Rochester, NY vet discusses cuddling cats below.

Did you know that cuddling your kitten is actually a very important part of raising little Fluffy? It’s important for our feline buddies to get used to being held and handled when they’re young. Otherwise, little Fluffy may grow up wary about being petted and picked up. This also helps you bond with your pet. Cats think of us sort of as their parents, but that special bond has to be nurtured. Cuddling your little furball will help her feel safe and loved. In fact, when you snuggle your furry pal, a special hormone is released in both of you. This hormone, oxytocin, is called the Cuddle Hormone, and it’s associated with feeling loved and—you guessed it—cuddling.

Senior Cats

Older cats tend to be very affectionate. They also can get a bit clingy, which is always adorable. However, they are often quite stiff and sore. You’ll need to be very careful when picking Fluffy up and holding her. When you put her down, make sure all her paws are on the ground before you let go.

Temperamental Cats

Some cats love being cuddled … for about a minute. Then, they will start wiggling to escape as though all of their nine lives depended on it. Don’t force Fluffy to tolerate being held if she doesn’t enjoy it. For one thing, you could get scratched. You may also have a hard time getting your kitty to let you pick her up next time.

Aloof Cats

There are also kitties that just don’t care for being petted or held. That’s purrfectly fine! It doesn’t mean that Fluffy doesn’t love you. She may just prefer to hang out with you instead of on you. Spoil her with toys, treats, catnip, and conversation. If there’s one thing we know about cats, it’s that they are all unique characters!
