Overheating is a huge concern for our feline friends at this time of year. Of course, your kitty can’t tell you if she feels too hot, so it’s important for you to know the warning signs. A local Rochester, NY vet lists some of them in this article.
Panting helps cool dogs off, but, as mentioned above, it doesn’t work very well for kitties. Most cats don’t pant unless they’re already too hot, so if you see Fluffy doing this, you should act under the assumption that she’s already overheating.
We know, lethargy is a life goal for some of our feline friends. However, even the laziest kitty should still respond to stimuli. If Fluffy just seems to be lolling around, and isn’t reacting much, she may be dangerously hot.
While some cats are naturally chattier than others, they all do have their own vocal styles. If Fluffy is too hot, she may meow in a different tone or manner than what she normally does. She may be louder or quieter than usual, and her voice may sound dry or distressed.
Check your pet’s mouth. If her tongue and/or gums look pale, dark red, or grey, it’s also a sign that Fluffy is in distress.
Vomiting is another warning sign. This may be accompanied by diarrhea. You may even see traces of blood. Contact your vet immediately if your kitty is throwing up.
Cats can only sweat through their paw pads. Check Fluffy’s toe beans. If they’re sweating, it’s another indication that your furry pal is too hot.
Drooling is normal for dogs, but it is definitely unusual for our feline pals. If your kitty is dribbling or salivating heavily, she could be in big trouble.
Other signs of heat exhaustion or heatstroke in cats include trembling, dizziness, and confusion. Fluffy may seem wobbly when she tries to walk.
If you see any of these issues, call your vet right away. You may need to cool your cat off before she can travel. Your vet may advise you to mist Fluffy with water, wrap her in a wet towel, or hold her in front of a freezer door. The sooner Fluffy is treated, the better!
