Fluffy’s favorite day is just around the corner: August 10th is National Lazy Day! Our feline buddies definitely take their beauty naps seriously. They’re also pretty diligent about keeping up with their morning naps, their midmorning naps, their afternoon naps, and their evening naps! Why are these little furballs so lackadaisical? A local Rochester, NY vet offers some insight into FLuffy’s motivation—or lack thereof—below.
There may be something to our feline friend’ habit of lounging around all day. In the wild, cats have to hunt for their food. That takes a lot of energy! Kitties can burn plenty of calories in those hectic chases. It makes sense that Fluffy would be ready to relax once her supper has been attained.
Another reason for Fluffy’s lack of motivation may be the fact that cats can get into serious trouble if they overheat. Kitties can only sweat through their paw pads, and panting just doesn’t cool them off very effectively. Plus, they have fur coats on! What does all this mean? Our feline pals can get dangerously overheated in a very short time, especially when it’s hot. It’s also entirely possible that they’ve just learned to err on the side of caution when it comes to avoiding overexertion. (They may actually be going overboard here, but that’s another topic.)
Kitties can sleep up to 20 hours a day. That does seem a bit excessive, given that pretty much every other living being on the planet gets by on somewhere between 8 and 14 hours. Of course, your furry little pal isn’t completely zonked out during all those naps. Fluffy spends most of her time in a half-sleeping/half-waking state, and is usually just dozing lightly instead of being sound asleep.
Keeping Kitty Purring
How does one celebrate this special day? It’s probably safe to say that your furry buddy would appreciate a comfy new bed. Store-bought ones are fine, but cats will sleep in just about anything. A box with a soft folded blanket in it will do just as well. Of course, you may want to join Fluffy, and perhaps relax with her on your lap as you read or watch TV. Those soothing purrs make great sleep aids!
